Stats we calculate

The basics

  • Poss%: The percentage of time with possession by a team.

  • Drives: The number of offensive drives by a team.

  • Scoring: The amount of points scored by a team.

  • 1st Downs: The number of first downs gained by a team.

  • Run: The number of rushing attempts and rushing yards by a team.

  • Fumbles: The number of total fumbles and fumbles lost by a team.

  • Pass: The number of completed passes, passing attempts and passing yards by a team.

  • Turnovers: The number of turnovers by a team.

  • 3rd Down Eff: The third down efficiency by a team as defined by the number of third downs converted on (i.e. first down achieved or a touchdown happened) and the total number of third downs.

  • 4th Down Eff: A team’s fourth down efficiency as defined by the number of fourth downs converted on (i.e. first down achieved or a touchdown happened) and the total number of fourth downs where a team went for it (i.e. chose not to punt or kick a field goal).

  • Red Zone: The record a team had while in the red zone; this is represented by the number of drives a team had while in the red zone that led to a touchdown and the total number of drives by a team that ended (or went through) the red zone.

  • Penalties: The total number of penalties called on a team, as well as the corresponding number of penalty yards.

  • Sacks: The number of sacks taken by a team’s passer(s).

  • Total Yds: The total yard of offense by a team.

Comparison stats

  • FieldPos%: Field possession percentage is the percentage of a team’s drives that start in opponent territory.

  • Stuffed%: The percentage of rushes that are stopped at or behind the line of scrimmage.

  • Deep%: The percentage of passes that are intended for deep targets, which is defined by anything more than 15 yards.

  • PassTime: The average passing time is the average amount of time a team’s passer(s) have in the backfield for every pass attempt, including sacks.

  • Passing%: The percentage of plays by a team that were passing plays.

  • Success%: Success rate or success percentage is the percentage of plays by a team that are considered to be successful; a play counts as a success if (a) 50% or more of the yard to go are gained on first down, (b) 70% or more of the yards to go are gained on second down or (c) 100% or more of the yards to gained are gained on third down / fourth down.

Passing

  • Cmp: Completed passes.

  • Att: Passing attempts.

  • Cmp%: Completion percentage.

  • Deep%: The proportion of pass targets by a passer in which the intended receiver is beyond 15 yards of the line of scrimmage.

  • Yds: Passing yards.

  • ANY: Adjusted net yards: (pass yards + 20*(pass TD) – 45*(interceptions thrown) – sack yards). This stat penalizes passers who throw too many interceptions and/or take huge losses from sacks, yet favors those who can convert completions into touchdowns.

  • TD: Passing touchdowns.

  • TD%: Passing touchdown percentage; that is, the percentage of passing attempts that result in a touchdown.

  • Int: Interceptions thrown.

  • Int%: Interception percentage; that is, the percentage of passing attempts that result in an interception.

  • Sack: Sacks against a passer.

  • Sack%: Sack percentage, or the percentage of passing attempts (plus sacks) result in a sack to a passer.

  • PassTime: Average passing time by a passer (see PassTime above for more details).

  • Y/A: Passing yards per passing attempt.

  • Long: Longest completed pass.

Receiving

  • Rec: Receptions

  • Att: Passing attempts to an intended receiver.

  • Catch%: Catch percentage is the percentage of passing attempts intended for that receiver that were completed (i.e. caught).

  • Target%: Target percentage is the percentage of total passing attempts by a receiver’s team that were intended for that receiver.

  • Deep%: The proportion of passing attempts to a receiver that were for more than 15 yards beyond the line of scrimmage.

  • Yds: Receiving yards.

  • Y/A: Yards per receiving attempt.

  • TD: Receiving touchdowns.

  • TD%: Receiving touchdown percentage.

  • Long: Longest receiving attempt.

  • Drop: The number of dropped passes.

  • Drop%: The percentage of passes intended for a receiver that were dropped.

  • YAC: Yards after catch.

Defense

  • Tks: Tackles

  • Asst: Assisted tackles.

  • Sacks.: Sacks.

  • Stuffs: The number of tackles at or behind the line of scrimmage. Similar to sacks, this is calculated by giving 1 stuff to a player whose tackle was unassisted and 0.5 stuffs for either an assisted tackle or a tackle with assistance.

  • Catch&Tk: A catch and tackle is a tackle on a receiver (almost) immediately after a catch is made by that receiver. The exact amount of time to qualify is half a second or less.

  • FF: Forced fumbles.

  • FR: Fumble recoveries.

  • Int: Interceptions caught.

  • Tips: Passes tipped.

  • Def TD: Defensive touchdowns.

Returns

  • Rt: Kickoff / punt returns.

  • Yds: Kickoff / punt yards.

  • Y/Rt: Yards per kickoff / punt return.

  • >20: Kickoff returns by a player that end at or beyond the 20 yard line.

  • >20%: Percentage of total kickoff returns by a player that end at or beyond the 20 yard line.

  • 20+: Punt returns by a player for more than 20 yards.

  • 20+%: Percentage of punt returns by a player that go for more than 20 yards.

  • TD: Kickoff / punt returns that go for a touchdown.

  • Long: Longest kickoff / punt return.

Kicking

  • XPM: Extra points made.

  • XPA: Extra points attempted.

  • FGM: Field goals made.

  • FGA: Field goals attempted.

  • FG%: Field goal percentage.

  • Y/FG: Yards per field goal attempt.

  • Long: Longest field goal made / punt kicked.

  • Pnt: Punts.

  • Yds: Punt yards.

  • Y/P: Yards per punt.

  • In20: Punts inside the 20 yard line.

  • In20%: Percentage of punts inside the 20 yard line.

Plays / Formations

  • Att: Attempts of that player.

  • Success%: Success rate or percentage (see Success% under Comparison Stats for more details).

  • Prevent%: Prevent percentage is the number of times that a team prevents their opponent from having a successful play when a play is run (see Success% under Comparison Stats for more details on what constitutes a success).

  • Yds/Play: Yards per play.

  • PassTime: Average passing time for a play (see PassTime under Comparisons Stats for more details).

  • 1stD: First downs earned on a play.

  • Stuffs: The number of tackles at or behind the line of scrimmage on a play.

  • Fmbl: The number of fumbles on a play.

  • Handoff: The number of handoffs on that play.

  • Comp: Completed passes on that play.

  • Sacks: Sacks against on a play.

  • Int: Interceptions thrown on a play.

  • Play Type: The number of times a play resulted in a run or a pass.

  • Snap Type: The number of snaps that were under center and the number that were long snaps (i.e. shotgun) on a play.

  • Direction: The direction the result of a play took; the options include left, center and right (note: it all depends on where the play ended, not what direction the play initially went).

  • # of Players in Backfield: The number of players in the backfield when a play was run.

  • To Go: The number of times that a player was executed with 0 – 3, 4 – 6, 7 – 10 or more than 10 yards to go.

  • Result: The number of times a play resulted in less than 0, 0 – 3, 4 – 6, 7 – 10 or more than 10 yards to go.

  • Down: The number of times that play was used on first down, second down, third down and fourth down.

  • Down Type: Number of times that a play was used on a standard down and a passing down. A standard down is defined as first downs, second downs with 6 or less yards to go or third downs with 4 or less yards to go, while a passing down is any second down with 7 or more yards to go or any third down with 5 or more yards to go.
